The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has designated July as Wrong Way Driving Awareness Month. Wrong way driving collisions occur when vehicles fail to observe pavement markings and posted traffic signs and proceed into a lane going the wrong direction. The majority of wrong way driving collisions are head-on, resulting in three-quarters of all wrong way fatalities.

The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles offer these tips to help drivers avoid wrong way driving collisions:

  • #StayRightatNight! Motorists are encouraged to stay in the right lane in order to minimize the chance of colliding with a driver traveling in the opposite direction.
  • Stay alert! Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and avoid driving with other distractions like cell phones.
  • Learn and obey all traffic signs. It is especially important to recognize red signs. If you drive past one, immediately turn around!
  • Report wrong way drivers. If you see a driver driving in the wrong direction, you should immediately dial 911. If the driver is approaching you, reduce your speed and pull off the roadway.
