Reports of bomb threats have resulted in evacuations and lockdowns at businesses, schools, and government buildings in Florida and throughout the United States—including our Clearwater office. Roman Austin Personal Injury Lawyers received a threat via e-mail, which was similar to others reported across the state and country.

On behalf of our experienced legal team, we would like to thank you all for your concerns. We are safe, but very much appreciate the outpour of support from our community.

We would like to also thank the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office for their protection and service during the investigation into these threats. Fortunately, no credible threat to public safety has been discovered.

If you receive a bomb threat, never take it lightly and always report the incident to law enforcement. Any threat is considered serious until proven otherwise. Even when you are in a public area, public safety is of utmost importance.

If you receive a bomb threat, follow these procedures:

  • Remain calm
  • Immediately notify your employer and/or law enforcement
  • If a bomb threat is received by phone, do not hang up and keep the caller on the long for as long as possible. If possible, pass a note or signal other employees to listen and help notify police. When the caller is talking, listen carefully, be polite, and display interest to keep the caller on the line and obtain more information about the situation. Observe the caller’s gender, age, emotional state, speech patterns, and background noise (e.g. music, people talking, traffic, etc.). Right down the date and time of the call. If the call was made through a smartphone, screenshot the window display of the phone call.
  • If a bomb threat is received by e-mail, immediately contact authorities and do not delete the message.
  • If a bomb threat is in the form of a handwritten note, immediately call the police and handle note as carefully as possible to avoid potentially compromising evidence.
  • Check the area for suspicious and unfamiliar items or packages. Signs of a suspicious package include no return address, poor handwriting, misspelled word, unexpected delivery, strange sounds or odors, foreign postage, or excessive postage.
  • Before you leave, take any personal belongings with you.
  • Windows and doors should stay open when you leave.
  • Do not attempt to turn on or off light switches.
  • If you are on the second floor or higher, take the stairs down and avoid using the elevators.
