A recent study from KFF shows that nearly 1 in 8 adults have tried Ozempic or some other GLP-1 medication. The same data shows that roughly 15 million people are currently taking some form of the medication.
While the weight loss benefits of Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs are widely known, there are some side effects that can be quite severe. Gastrointestinal issues and mental health concerns may top the list, but a new side effect has recently been discovered. A recent Harvard study links Ozempic use to a rare type of vision loss.
If you have suffered vision loss after taking Ozempic, you should contact an experienced St. Petersburg personal injury lawyer. You may be owed significant compensation as a result of your injury.
What Is NAION?
NAION is nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. It is a condition in which there is a lack of blood flow to the optic nerve. This condition causes sudden vision loss, typically in one eye. NAION is the leading cause of blindness in people over 50.
This condition usually comes on suddenly. You may wake one morning to find that you have blindness in one eye. Unfortunately, the exact cause of this condition is unknown, and there are no known treatments. The blurred vision in an affected eye usually does not get any better over time.
What Data Is Available About Ozempic and Vision Loss?
Harvard recently conducted a study involving nearly 17,000 hospital patients. The study aimed to compare patients taking medications containing semaglutide, such as Ozempic, to those on alternative diabetes management drugs.
The results of the study were quite shocking. In fact, the patients taking Ozempic or other drugs containing semaglutide were four to eight times more likely to develop NAION. This is a substantially higher risk than the patients on alternative drugs.
While the study that revealed this information is fairly new, the results are certainly startling. More research is being conducted to learn more about the link between Ozempic and vision loss. Additionally, a recent study published by the University of Southern Denmark also shows a link between Ozempic use and vision loss. That particular study revealed that Ozempic users were twice as likely to develop NAION as those using other diabetes treatments.
Are There Other Lawsuits Involving Ozempic?
Vision loss is not the only potential side effect of Ozempic. In fact, some lawsuits have already been filed against the drug manufacturer for other types of injuries. Many users of the drug have experienced stomach paralysis and gallstone problems.
When these types of drugs cause severe injuries or even wrongful death, the manufacturers need to be held liable. If you have experienced any of these side effects after taking Ozempic, you should talk to an experienced personal injury lawyer who can help you.
How Much Is My Ozempic Case Worth?
If you have suffered NAION after taking Ozempic, you might be wondering how much compensation you can get. The fact is that Ozempic vision loss litigation is still very new. It is difficult to estimate how much your case may be worth until more work is done on these cases.
Generally, the value of your personal injury claim depends on several factors, including:
- The severity of your injuries
- The amount of your medical bills
- Whether you will be able to go back to work
- How your life has been affected
- The amount of insurance coverage available
Drug manufacturers typically have deep pockets, so cases involving severe injuries can often be worth a substantial amount of money. The best way to determine how much your case may be worth is to seek the help of a lawyer who has experience handling these types of cases.
