Manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Bayer, Mirena is a hormonal intrauterine device, also known as an IUD, that is prescribed to women who have heavy periods or who are looking for a long-term form of birth control. The T-shaped device is implanted into the woman’s uterus where it secretes a synthetic hormone, levonorgestrel, that can prevent pregnancy for up to five years.
While Bayer and the doctors who prescribe Mirena claim it is safe, there are a number of risks women who use Mirena face.
