According to the National Highway Safety Administration, the fatalities on United States roads increased in 2015, and now, the National Safety Council states more passengers, pedestrians, and drivers have suffered fatal injuries in just the first six months of 2016 than in previous years.
The National Safety Council (NSC) estimated that nearly 19,100 individuals died on U.S. roadways between January 1 and June 30, and an additional 2.2 million people suffered serious injuries. The NSC believes that these fatalities and injuries have cost the United States about $205 billion, which includes hospital expenses, productivity losses, and other factors.
What is Contributing to this Rising Statistic?
The NSC has three hypotheses to explain why the number of fatalities is rising:
1.The economy is strengthening. The thriving economy can have several effects on roadway statistics, including a greater number of delivery vans, semi-trucks, and other cargo vehicles carrying goods intended for consumers and businesses.
2.The number of unemployed Americans is decreasing. Now that more people have joined the workforce, there are more drivers on the road commuting to and from work. Of course, this increases the likelihood of crashes, fatalities, and injuries.
3.Gas prices are lower. During the first six months of 2016, average gas prices were 16% cheaper than they were in 2015. This has encouraged more motorists to drive, which contributes to the increased number of miles driven, which has increased by 3.3%.
Because there are more drivers occupying the road, it is important for motorists to abide by the laws of the road in order to prevent deadly, unnecessary collisions.
