Motorcycle Safety Precautions

While riding a motorcycle is undoubtedly a fun pastime, it can also be a dangerous recreational activity. Having a lack of skills and knowledge needed to operate one safely can put riders and other motorists on the road at risk. Before heading out for a motorcycle ride, it’s critical to be prepared for a safe ride. Here are some tips.

1. Wear a Helmet

Wearing a helmet can keep you protected from a serious head injury should you be involved in an accident. In fact, it’s not uncommon for motorcycle accident victims to sustain brain trauma, skull features, concussions, or other severe head injuries. If possible, wear safety goggles or a helmet equipped with a shield for extra protection.

2. Wear Protective Clothing

You’ve probably heard the saying, “dress for the slide, not the ride.” Keep this easy-to-remember slogan top-of-mind when getting ready for a trip. Wearing proper clothing will keep your body and skin protected in the event of a crash. The following protective clothing is recommended for motorcyclists:

  • Heavy-duty jacket and pants
  • Sturdy Gloves and boots

Without protective clothing, a rider could be prone to “road rash” which is a serious and painful skin injury. Road rash causes the skin to rub off. Pebbles and other road debris may also be lodged into the skin.

3. Ride Defensively

Taking extra precautions and riding defensively can reduce the risk of being involved in a motorcycle accident. When on the road be sure to:

  • Check mirrors and look to your sides
  • Anticipate traffic pattern changes
  • Give yourself enough time and space to react for sudden changes
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Ride confidently, and refrain from making sudden maneuvers
  • Never ride aggressively or speed
  • Obey traffic rules

4. Get Professional Training

While you may have passed your motorcycle rider’s test and have a license, it’s still a good idea to consider taking an advanced, professional course to improve your riding skills. Being a skilled biker can keep everyone safer on the road.

5. Keep Up With Routine Maintenance

Keeping your motorcycle in top mechanical order can help avoid malfunctions in the midst of a ride. Be sure to perform routine maintenance and check for the following:

  • Corrosion or damage to tires, lines, and cables
  • Damage on brakes
  • Low oil and other fluid levels, as well as leaks
  • Headlight outages
  • Loose bolts and bearings

If you find any of the problems above, have them fixed before you head out for your next ride.
